With all these family gatherings people take part in many don't think about eating healthy.
As a Hispanic I know discussing Carbohydrates is unheard of! All though not all Carbs are bad, and we are all entitled to a cheat day why not change our view of Food all together! Naturally we go crazy with our food consumption in parties and family gatherings hoping through out the year we can shed any unwanted weight gain, BUT... Let's be honest how many of us put in the actual work needed to shed those pounds?
This blog will help you to have healthy delicious options that can replace common dishes packed with unhealthy fats, hydrogenated Oils, carbohydrates and sodium.
Lets do some research
Pernil (pork shoulder) It is not considered one of the leaner cuts of meat a 100g portion contains 12 grams total fat which is 19% of the daily recommended value by the U.S Food and Drug administration. Which when considering a low calorie diet is way too much, your actual serving size should be 5g.
LETS BE SERIOUS NOT EVEN I HAVE RESISTED A LARGE PORTION OF PERNIL THAT WAS MARINATED OVER NIGHT WITH HIGH SODIUM SEASONINGS SUCH AS ADOBO AND SAZON.
Then we have Arroz con Guandules (Yellow rice w/pigeon peas) DOUBLE CARBO WHAMMY
Don't forget your potato salad and baked ziti, bread alcohol soda just to name a few! We haven't even touched the pastelles and desserts!!

Let's make some adjustments:
Use lower sodium seasonings if powered seasonings is your thing Goya provides lower sodium Products but all natural and fresh is better! Taste much better as well!
Fresh Garlic sea salt pepper cilantro Can you say YUMMY
Instead of potato salad have a plethora of greens in a tossed or vegetable salad
Use brown rice instead of white, Instead of a pork shoulder use a pork Loin
When making any lasagna or baked ziti use low fat cheeses, wheat pasta and make your sauce from scratch, cuts out All the excess sodium, hydrogenated oils and is 100 times healthier! Drink lots of water rather than juice and soda, go light on the alcohol as well, family gatherings should be about love not which family member gets obliterated! Be sure to eat a healthy breakfast so that you don't over indulge at dinner, lets keep in mind the leftovers you will eat the following day!
aghhhh CARB OVERLOAD
I know you all may think I'm raining on your carb parade but consider this, we all love our families, we would do anything for them and yet in todays society more children ever in history are obese have type 2 diabetes and are medicated by 8 which in turn causes liver and kidney problems/damage. Not sure if you see where I'm going with this but please understand that Loving someone never entails loving them to being unhealthy or to death! Everything we teach and feed our loved ones is what they will teach and feed there's! The change starts with you!
