The Then & The Now
Mel Jason Smalls better known as Drag~on released his debut album "Opposite Of H2O" in the year 2000, that album was very successful earning him a spot on the US billboard and the album went Gold. His career take off was at a time when music was actually entertaining. When a lyricist/rapper had to earn there stripes with actual talent and ability.
With so many artist at there peek at the time, it is quite the accomplishment to shine amongst so many greats, but he in fact did so. After a short time on a few different labels, he then signed a contract with friend Swizz Beats. Together they created hits such as, "Spit These Bars" and " Down Bottom".
With Lines like "I only Pop chickens that's flexible ankles touch neck the sex incredible" he had the ladies going crazy and the radio on fire. Drag made sure to give his listeners exactly what they needed and is still doing so today.
In my previous blogs about music you all know my discontent with the hip hop artist of today, if we can even call so many of them that. Hip hop is an art form, poetry of sorts and it takes natural born talent to master captivating an audience. Through time he has truly mastered his craft. Now under his own label, Hood Environment he's back, (not that he ever left) killing everything. I promise all you real hip hop lovers he's about to take you back to that goose bump, hair on your neck standing, raw and pure talent.
I've been watching his freestyle videos on instagram and on his You tube page and I'm literally at the edge of my seat every time.
With lines like…
N1ggas think they spitting bars, I'll bury em, cause n!gga I'm a f…..g barbarian. These n1ggas getting scared they worrying, they know I cook N1ggas skin and start wearing it, bring em back to the pack and start sharing em, I wore all my chains today don't stare at em. Pull out that roddy Piper and shoot them Rick flares at em.
I mean lets be serious, who right now is spitting fire like that? Don't worry I'll wait..
Some might say I am biased because I come from an era where music was at it's absolute best, but truly I'm always hoping for something great on the radio to give me that ole feeling back, that I can conquer anything feeling, because my past struggles are relate able. That being from any hood isn't all bad, although difficult, Honorable because it molds geniuses. No one has to stay there but the stories that come out of there are amazing! Hip hop is artistry at its best, simply because it is an art form not many can look at and understand but for those who can relate, it is the Picasso of music. So the individual holding the paint brush or in this case the microphone has to be naturally gifted to present a finished product that all of us who were raised in the hood could in a metaphoric sense hang on our wall!
Drag~On is doing this on the regular. So to all my hip hop lovers, all my readers I am going to need you all to go show your support to a true artist, and a king of his craft.
